National Science Centre research project:
"Origin of glacial landscape and the last Scandinavian Ice Sheet dynamics in Lubawa Upland"
Outline of the project
Series of characteristic highly elevated morainic uplands defined as a isolated Pleistocene elevations is located within the glacial landscape of European Lowlands. Their origin is related to the processes which occurred within interlobate zones of Scandinavian Ice Sheets, therefore they are often defined as an interlobate uplands. The example of these areas is the Lubawa Upland which is one of highly elevated morainic uplands located within young glacial landscape of northern Poland. This region is characterized by unique glacial relief within Polish Lowlands with spectacular topography (very high denivelations - untypical for lowlands). It is believed that the Lubawa Upland was probably isolated morainic elevation throughout entire Pleistocene. During the last glaciation the upland was significant and large obstacle at the ice-bed interface of the last Scandinavian Ice Sheet and an ice-divide, which separated the Vistule ice lobe on the west and the Mazurian ice lobe on the east, was probably located within this region. So far, the origin of the unique glacial landscape in this area was explained with processes of intensive glacial accumulation of deposits and their glacitectonic deformation within the interlobate zones of Pleistocene ice sheets.

Despite relatively high interests of the researcher for this area, issues related to the interactions between the last Scandinavian Ice Sheet and the processes of glacial landforms formation are not fully recognized. There are no detailed data concerning the last ice sheet dynamics within this region. Therefore,  authors would like to take studies within this area and the main goal of this research is to determine the origin of the Lubawa Upland glacial landscape and the reconstruction of the last Scandinavian Ice Sheet dynamics. Basic research problem, which is planned to resolve, is the role of the last Pleistocene ice sheet in the formation of the Lubawa Upland glacial landscape.

Final results of the research will be included in papers, conference presentations and PhD dissertation.
